What’s up QuirkyLand?

Just everything! Everyone is feeling better (see below), Channukah is over and the little one keeps asking me when it’s going to be Channukah again. We burned a Yule log (and roasted marshmallows over it ;) ). I have five bored kids home till after New Years, but I have work to do, so we’re kind of at odds. I have tons of stuff to drop off at Good Will or Salvation Army. Maybe tomorrow. Got media whore love coming up after this post!

12/20 – Did you know my sister is awesome? For the low low price of 15$ (I’m going to give her more, the kids were suppose to help) she is cleaning the kids room, which includes getting rid of all the crap I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of (I kept tallying it up in my head *sigh*), putting away the stuff they use, and sweeping. ??She is amazing and I love her. ??Lest you think I have done nothing while she slaves away (and earns some dough!), I’ve sorted all the kids clothes, gotten rid of didn’t fit (in bags to donate tomorrow), threw out what was damaged beyond repair, saved a couple shirts to make into patches (the sleeves were holy or didn’t fit, but the design was fine) and put it all away. Now I’ve got cornbread in the oven :-)

12/13 – Really, Everyone? Eshiva brought some kind of stomach bug home from school last Thursday. She didn’t go to school on Friday. She had a fever and was vomiting and diarrhea, you know, classic stomach bug. No one else had it all day yesterday so I thought it wouldn’t spread. ??I was wrong. Malachai got it, and he didn’t understand at all that even though he was so thirsty, every tiny sip made him vomit again. Poor kid. I have something like ten towels, five top sheets and three fitted sheets to wash. He also didn’t quite reach the trash bin at all – I get that, he didn’t want to move, but I hate sick laundry.??Michael got home around 11 – he was queasy and he has it too. Yep, he has some bedding to wash as well. ??So far, knock on wood, I don’t have it. Let’s keep it that way. Neither does Dorian. ??I am going to try and take him to the Channukah festival at shul today. The other two can’t go, and I feel a bit like Typhoid Mary and I I’d rather not get everyone around me sick, but… they were really looking forward to this. We’ll see what happens I guess. ??I had also wanted to go out today with the fam, but I suspect my biggest baby will be in bed all day. Understandable, and I am “glad” he only gets sick on his day off, but why the fuck does he only get sick on his day off??? It also magically coincides with when I Have big chores to get done. Grrrr

12/12 – Kitchenaid Mixers are the bomb. I totally said that. So, I picked up a slicer/shredder attachment for my Kitchenaid instead of buying a new food processor and ohmigodyay! Not only did it mean one less gadget in my kitchen, but I think it works better than the processor did! We shredded ten potatoes in no time last night, plus four onions. ??So if you’ve been thinking about getting one, do it!??I also have the grinder, which I don’t use even weekly, but when I need it it’s amazing. Fresh ground chicken and beef as a fraction of the cost. Plus it’s awesome for chopped liver, which is also stupidly expensive to purchase pre-made. ??I’ve been eying the pasta maker, but I don’t think I’d use it often enough to warrant buying it

Just a novella of an update

Grabbed from Punky Moms, hence the formatting. Mostly for my own records too.

First, hello to all our new members! I think I hit all the intros to welcome you in, but I’m not totally sure. I’ve barely been on the computer lately at all, let alone on here, and some things just slip by me. I’m Jenn. I live in South Florida. It’s hot and it’s humid and it’s home. I have three biological kids – Dorian is 9, Malachai is 7 and Eshiva is 4. I also have my siblings who I look after, they are both 17. My husband is a member on here and has also been missing. Rev Fish is a tattoo artist, movie junkie and avid reader. I am a stay at home mom, although all of my brood is in school this year, so I’ve been trying to fill my time a little more. It hasn’t worked so far.

On to the “why the fuck haven’t you been around Jenn, hmm??” post.

Mostly I’ve been reading. Or drawing. Or been out with Michael.

Last week I fought with an external hard drive all freaking week. It worked fine for a while, and suddenly my Mac decided it didn’t want to play with the PC. So I bought a new drive, which also didn’t want to play. Finally I gave in and spent *more* on a Mac formatted drive (this is fucking stupid, as I formatted the other one the exact same way) and may lightning strike me if it didn’t work first time out. So… of course the PC didn’t want to play. Not that any of you care, but I wound up partitioning off a bunch of space and formatted it as MS-DOS and left the rest as Mac journaled and viola, magic I can easily move my files around.

Today we tried to hit the gym this morning, but the guy we had to speak with wasn’t there and things had changed since last time. Like there not being built in locks in the lockers. So we packed in and went to a local park and walked the park. I think it was about a mile, maybe more? Not bad. I kept up with Michael’s walking stride, which paced me slightly faster than my “Disney” walking pace (which is faster than my normal pace). Came home and fucked around for a while and then went back to the gym b/c the guy we needed to chat with was there. Signed up for a 30 day free trial and picked up the kids, picked up some locks from the store (for the lockers, duh) and now we’re home and they are bitching and moaning about their homework.

Malachai has been more needy than normal. I spoke with his OT and was told it didn’t sound neurological (good) and to teach him to fly a kite. O_o I don’t get this one at all. Something to get him active, but specifically a kite? So now I need to find a freaking kite when it isn’t really kite season.

Sara and Michael and taking drivers ed. Sara hit a cone, twice, while trying to park (the same cone, I might mention). I told her how awful, she killed that poor cone. She told me to teach her how to park. I laughed and explained that I can parallel park like a pro but pulling into a space? Not so much. Lucky for me when I took my drivers test a million years ago at the end, when it came time to park, there was a spot directly in front of where I exited the driver test course. Then I yelled at her to watch out for cones, they like to jump in front of cars ;)

Speaking of a million years ago, my birthday is next month. I got to wondering if that is why I suddenly wanted to go back to school (not for a career, just because, so I can’t justify it) or find something to do. I don’t think it is, but it was interesting timing. I feel like I’ve been floating through my days without a destination in mind. Am I going to wake up and be 60 or 80 and wonder what the fuck I did with my life? Scary thought, that. So, I need to find something to do. Ideas accepted! Something to do can be anything. I don’t want to spend all day at the gym (I never get that endorphin rush, so it’s just work to me, nothing to make me truly want to go back for the sake of going back). I don’t want to take pictures of grass all day long. I just don’t know.

So, that’s my novella. I spend my time running around to therapy and bowling and dance class and school and everything in between.

Today…

my dad decided to divvy up moms jewelry. Weird, right? Then he said he could sell it at one of those gold places. I said no, you can’t. I told him, what if Eshiva wants it when she is old enough to appreciate it?

Meh.

So I went through it. I tried on the opals, which Sara wants. I don’t want them anyway. I took her wedding band (I haven’t worn on in ages, as I outgrew my silver one) and I also took my dads original wedding band (the one he outgrew – I believe he’s been wearing his fathers).

I asked him to keep the rest. If he wants the box out of his room, I’ll find someplace in our room for it.

In other exciting news, school starts soon! That means I have time to paint, and I’ll have more time to tattoo and draw and otherwise do the things I’ve been putting off for the past almost nine years. Yay!

My brother rocks

He ran out to walgreens (my sibs don’t drive – this was a walking trip… I guess he might have ridden his bike… it’s not far, but far enough I wouldn’t walk it lol) and stopped by slev (7-11) to get me a slurpee.

I’ve been wanting a freaking slurpee for a week now. A red one. (Red is it’s own flavour, didn’t you know that? lol)

I have no cash on me, so my sister says, if I was going to get one, what would I want?

I said a red one, the dollar size. You know, the tiny one.

My brother, who only recently started to get “cool” to me (we recently gave him a pair of Michael’s boots, and he wants a black trench coat and he’s into writing scripts and cinimatography and stuff – he’s starting to be cool, m hm) walks in with an X Men Wolverine cup with a nifty straw that has a Wolverine figure in it that sticks to both the straw and the stand it came with.

Bad. Ass.

It’s a reusable cup too – score.

Updatey Goodness!

I haven’t updated in a while… lots to say! Let’s start with the good news. I sent this email to family a few days ago:

Just spreading a little fantabulous news, Malachai had his therapy evals last week, and he is done with PT! This is amazing, because not six months ago he would fall over standing still. No joke. Now he can balance on one leg so long he can’t count that high (ok, maybe he can, but it’s a long time!)  He is still in speech and occupational therapies, but those are improving too. They will re-evaluate him in another six months. Maybe in the next six months he will learn how to sit in, and stay in, a chair ;)

Not only is therapy going well, but he only missed one word on his spelling test today (out of ten words) and he has been helping me read Coraline at night. His speech therapist suggested I talk to the school and see what kind of literature we can tie into his daily work to keep him interested. He reads like crazy for her, not so much for me. Apparently, I just hadn’t picked the right books. We’re reading The Tale of Despereaux next (Dorian’s choice). I think I will be moving a bunch of books down the shelf for Eshiva, and finding some more appropriate books for Mal & Dor.

Speaking of Dorian, he is doing basketball after school once a week and he loves it. I think we’ll continue to do it once it’s up. It runs in five week sessions and he started last week. I looked into the local rec center for something for both the boys to do, as our PT suggested Mal do some type of sport. I don’t know what, but we’ll find something. I think they are looking into karate (ok, I am pushing karate) but I am not going to push it if he’s really not into it. We were also thinking bowling, but the PT specificaly said sports that work the entire body. We need to increase (and maintain) his muscle tone, as it’s significantly “below age level.” Eshiva is going to be taking a dance class once a week in the mornings, and she is uber-excited about that. She wont stop talking about it, in fact.

Shivie is a little chatterbox, and thinks she’s a princess. She recently discovered dinosaurs (and I wish we lived closer to DC, because there are no decent dino exhibits around here that I can find) and barbie. She turns four on Feb 10th and woe be unto you if you try and tell her she’s three.

Everyone else is well. Dad and Michael and still employed (yay!) and I am still getting enough work to buy fun stuff by freelancing (also yay!). Michael and Sara are looking into the SAT and making plans and doing all that fun 17 year old stuff.

Ah… I think that wraps us up! I’m sure there is more, but it’s daily stuff. I was just so excited about Malachai! He is still having troubles, but there is a light.

and I posted this to PM’s yesterday:

Michael was given written notification today that the therapy place we go is closing on Friday.

Fucking economy.

They are going to try to farm everyone out to other locations, and we may be able to keep our OT if the other place she works can fit him in (and if they take our ins and if it’s in a reasonable drive). Our ST was an intern.

What really stinks is I really, really like our ST, and WTF giving us one weeks notice?

I know we can find someplace else (hell, maybe the place a few blocks down the street takes our ins and offers what we need) but this still stinks.

and I posted this today as a follow-up:

Yay!!! Our rockin speech gal called me up this morning and told me that she interviewed this morning at a place that is even closer and they are working their hardest to absorb all of the speech therapists AND their clients AND keep the same schedule!

She gave me the number of the new place, and I left a message around 10AM. She phoned me back around 5:30, apologized for it taking so long to get back to me, and told me what was going on. They do take our insurance, and are working to have the approvals transferred to them from our current place. She is hoping to start Monday!

We see Courtney tomorrow and Thursday and I am just thrilled it sounds like we won’t have a lapse, at least here.

I still need to find out where the place our OT works is located (she was split between the two places I guess), if they take our ins, and if we can fit in over there. I really like our OT as well – not like I like our ST, but she is awesome with Malachai. I’d hang out with our ST, not so much with our OT.

But wait, there’s more! We’re adopting a new puppy!

So, we’ve been thinking about getting a companion for Malachai for a while now. Therapy dogs are quite expensive, and the “free” ones take a lot of paperwork and legwork. No doubt they don’t deserve it, but it was more than we needed. It’s not like we were looking for a seeing eye dog or anything, you know? So, we found this little guy! We’re picking him up either Thursday or Sunday.

He’s been there for a year! I can’t imagine why someone didn’t want to take him home, but I am glad they didn’t! We drove down to Ft. Lauderdale on Monday and went back to meet him. He is so friendly, and energetic and playful. He jumped up on Eshiva, but did not knock her down. The gal who showed him to us said he gets along with all the other dogs/cats in the rescue, have never bitten anyone, and is healthy. Apparently he was purchased from a pet store, and then got sick. He had demodectic mange (yes, just like our Yorkie) but his fur is full and thick and I didn’t feel any scabs or anything on his body. They said nothing about meds or anything else, and he is neutered. This is good, because Sasha is so sick, putting her through surgery to spay her would be too taxing on her immune system (so says the vet).

He is a year and a half old, and is the perfect size. Yay!

From the rescue site:
More About Patches/Atos: Patches was purchased from a puppy store. He is a sweet fellow who is good with other animals including cats. He is waiting for a forever home with lots of playmates or toys. Walks in the park or just around the block. Nice yard to play in but not totally necessary. Patches loves his toys!

Oh, he’s a beagle/basset mix. Cuteness!

Anything else? Probably not. I am sticking with good news right now.
