In lieu of real content, quick update stolen from PMs

I can’t remember what the last ting I really posted was, and I don’t really feel like looking.

Before the end of January, I completed my first tattoo. It was smaller than a quarter, but it fulfilled my own requirement of doing this before the end of January. I know it was stupid, but this has been going on for two years, and I told myself if I wasn’t ahead of where I was last year, or the year before, that was it. So Michael let me do a cute piece Malachai drew a bit ago and I don’t feel so much pressure from myself now. Phew!

We went to Orlando (Disney) in January as well, both to celebrate with Michael and Sara who turned 18 and to celebrate Eshiva turning 5. It was a super quick overnight trip, so we didn’t make plans to visit with anyone. She had a blast. She got her birthday pin and heaven forbid anyone not say Happy Birthday to her – she made damn sure they saw her pin lol

Dorian went to the orthodontist and he goes back the end of March to get his braces. Malachai hasn’t started his yet, but we’re getting there! He goes back I think the end of this month.

I went to the periodontist and had a gum therapy transplant thingie done yesterday. I am slightly better than miserable but not entirely well. It was a stupid nothing and I am surprised it took so much out of me. I put the details behind a spoiler tag for those who don’t want to hear. It’s not so bad, but it’s not so good either. Sometimes in seeking, we don’t always find

Sometimes I go looking for my mom, because I’ve forgotten she isn’t there, and I am surprised when I can’t find her.

Last week Sara was talking downstairs and I swore it was mom. I don’t hear her in my own voice, although I hear her in my words. I was pleasantly surprised to find her in Sara’s. [Read more...]

Awesome Orthodontist News :-)

Malachai had another orthodontist appointment this morning. He was a little wary because she tried to get him into the chair (I did not prep him for a chair visit, just more xrays) so we did one x-ray first, and then got him into the chair. He was awesome with the xray! It was a re-take of the one where they put things in your ears and on the bridge of your nose to keep you still and do your whole head. I think he moved in this one too, but he did an awesome job of it regardless.

Then when I got him in the chair, he tried to get out and stepped on the control so it went up. The assistant showed him which button to push to make it go down, so he spent some time going up and down. Our ortho is fucking amazing, she let him do this!

His bottom 6 year molars haven’t come in yet, so she wants to take two individual xrays next time we go in (in 8 weeks) so see why not (the top ones did) – I think it’s because his mouth is so tiny, OTOH, he’s also only lost his bottom two front teeth, the rest are all his baby teeth. He was 7 last August. *shrugs*

I am excited! She said he did a great job. She doesn’t think they have a good enough relationship to really get the work done yet, but she said they are getting there!

Dorian had his brackets looked at because he was in a little bit of pain and was told to brush better because the gums are inflamed around them. He also had his lip bumper adjusted, was told he could keep it out today and rinse with warm salt water to heal up what’s in there. He goes back at the end of the month (his original appt) to check on that tooth that has started coming out (the one that didn’t have room to come out a couple of months ago) and possibly have his braces put on.

I made an appointment for myself for a consult for next Wednesday. Ya’ll might remember last May I had some cavities filled and the dentist fucked up my teeth. I was told it was a “bite problem” (a magically occurring bite problem I might add, one I didn’t have before they drilled my fucking teeth out!) and to see an ortho. So I am. I am hoping it is a quick and inexpensive fix.

more in the Dorian orthodontist saga

Let me back a minute. We went to the dentist last week and had a shock. Dor needed three more fillings and a crown. What. The. Hell. So after explaining to the dentist (who was new and who freaking rocks, by the way) that I was expecting to come in for a sealant (you know, the stuff they use a paintbrush to brush on) and not major work, I was just a bit surprised and I don’t like dental surprises. So he examines his teeth, counts his fillings and crowns, takes an extra x-ray and tells me that we do indeed need three more fillings and a crown. I ask them not to use the nitrous b/c Dor reacts badly too it, and just use the novocain and we’re off. Two of the fillings were nothing and he didn’t even numb that side of his mouth. Actually, all three may have been nothing, but they had to numb for the crown, so one of the fillings was numbed as well. Unfortunately one of the crowns is where a spacer was, so he tried not to fuck up the space, and did an OK job of it.

We went from the dentist to the orthodontist and he got his bottom brackets put on but had new spacers put on top. It was a busy dental day. We dropped D off at school with instructions that if he isn’t feeling well to tell them and I’ll come get him. All was fine except for the brackets tearing up his cheeks and his gums are swollen over his back teeth.

We went to the orthodontist this morning to get his palate expander, headgear and lip bumper. Oy.

The headgear is for at home only. 10 – 12 hours a day, so he can almost put it on at bed time and have that be that. We were also told he can skip it for sleepovers and stuff, so it’s not life or death. I never had headgear, so I didn’t know a thing about it.

The expander gets turned every other day and is a marked improvement over the one I had 20some years ago. Mine covered my entire palate and was a pain to clean. His is just the metal and while he is having trouble talking right now, and swallowing, once he gets used to it, it will be way better than full coverage. Mine was also turned every freaking day.

The lip bumper can also come out, but shouldn’t. It’s helping to expand the lower jaw (if I understood correctly) and give the tongue more room. I opted not to have braces on the bottom, so I didn’t have that either. New experience!

So the boy is miserable and that sucks because Malachai goes back in a few weeks to finish his x-rays and start this mess and Dorian is gonna be all whiny about it. I hope he puts on a good face about it, b/c Mal *really* needs this work done, or we’re looking at surgeries to correct his problems.

More Medical Updates

So we saw the ped about the referral this evening. He wanted us in because he thought a craniofacial specialist was a BIG DEAL (for what it’s worth, I totally agree) and wanted to see him again before writing the referral. I have no problem with this, I just wish the nurse on the phone had fucking said as much.

So he said he knew M had a facial deformity for a while now (thanks for mentioning that, doc) and had been keeping an eye on it. He also mentioned some deformity in the cheek bone/sinus cavity area. Can I interject here that I never, ever thought my son had a deformity. I was a little shocked at the casual use of the word. I know he has a severely recessed jaw – I had one too and it just required major orthodontics and no surgery (although it was threatened). His big squishy cheeks are not a deformity, they are big and squishy and I love to squish my cheeks into them. I just had to get that out. When I hear deformity I think of major, obvious things. Not minor “normal” things like recessed jaws and big squishy cheeks.

He said he’d like to see an orthodontist first. I said no problem, seeing on on Monday afternoon! He said the one we’re seeing is a good one, too. I told him I’d hold off on making the cranio-facial appointment until after the ortho.

He said he had never heard of the CF we were referred to by Susan (our ST) but when I told him he was out of Joe DiMaggio he said he must be good.

My head is kind of spinning – I am back to “is it braces or is it surgery?” and not sure which to hope for.

Dor was awesome at the dentist this morning like I said. It was two fillings, and he got dropped off at school around 11. He told me his lip felt better after he played whiffle ball.
