I was told I never updated

About Malachai’s first day that is. He did great. We picked him up and had to run out, he fell asleep in the car. Slept until 5:30. Someone stayed up too late that night.

Tuesday was good too. I spoke with his teacher in the morning (briefly) and she said that she did notice when he is done, he is done. That’s it, no more. I just nodded.

He seems to like it, isn’t complaining or freaking out about being dropped off. Michael took him this morning, but he likes walking in the morning with me. We talk. It’s nice.

One down, one to go

I walked Malachai to school this morning. We sat in the cafeteria for about 20 – 25 minutes. We talked on the way there, and in the cafe. He cuddled and sat on me and fidgeted. The teacher gave him a nametag (it also has his lunch bar code on it if he buys) and I explained what it was for.

She said it was time to line up, so I showed him where to go and she took his hand. I gave him a kiss and left. I figured it would be easier that way. Hopefully I was right! He’s been to school before, so that’s not the problem. The problem was that he doesn’t know anyone, but I hope it’s not a problem.

I guess I’ll find out this afternoon! Dorian starts school next week.

Today went well

We had kindergarten orientation this morning at CSE. Everyone said hi in the office (I know most of them from when M & S went there) and even the prinicipal said hi and knew which kid it was :-) Malachai’s teacher will be Mrs. Booth, and when we walked into the room she extender her hand to shake his and he did! OK, he sort of backwards shook it with his left hand, as his right hand was holding mine, but he *touched* her. He smiled and said hi.

We went over what their specials are (like gym, art & music), where the playground is, where to drop him off in the morning and where to pick him up in the afternoon, what time lunch is, etc..

I was really surprised. He seems all about it. He liked the room. Good stuff.

Met with the psychiatrist (psychologist?) in the office before we left and filled out the release for for the psychologist we saw about the testing. Also discussed some other stuff, got a form for last years teacher to fill out if at all possible. I saw the ESE teacher briefly, we’ll be meeting soon as well.

I feel very different about CSE than I do about HACS.  First of all, I’ve known a lot of the staff for almost ten years now. Not on a constant basis, but I recognize them, I know them, I’ve been around them before. They all knew my mom, they knew M & S, and to some degree they did see my kids grow up. I got three hugs this morning in the office and a lot of smiles. It is a different feeling in so many different ways. I don’t have to wear a skirt and shirt sleeves to go there. We saw one sleeved dad this morning, and another with a lot of work. I am still an oddity, but no where near as much as at HACS.

It is early to say it, but a lot of my concerns were alleviated today alone. Let’s hope this year really is off to a good start.

Autism/Autism Spectrum

I was talking on my LJ to a fellow mom who also has an Autism diagnosed child. She mentioned that the nitrous at the dentist might cause her son to feel as uncomfortable as the actual dental work. ETA: She explained that the nitrous feeling was enough to cause screaming and discomfort. I never thought about it. I expected Malachai to not like how the novacain made him feel. He is so sensitive to taste (everything is “spicy,” even foods I would consider mild… anything overly flavoured, it doesn’t have to be spicy like peppers or what most people consider “spicy”) and touch. I just never expected how the nitrous made him feel to be unpleasant. It makes me wonder if it did work better than I thought it did, but in a way that made him more sensitive to the pain, or at least, more sensitive to the sensation. It would make me yell too. We have another appointment next week to finish the work. To be honest, he was fine once he settled down and we go in the car. He is even willing to go back. I do not feel wasting time hoping to find an oral surgeon who can fully sedate him is worth the risk of not having insurance to pay for it.

Now, to the question. Do you have a child who has been diagnosed with Autism or anything on the Autism Spectrum? Can you tell me what “sets” them off? What makes them melt down, freak out, or otherwise cause massive problems to their day? Like I said, I never even thought the nitrous might be the culprit. What else am I not thinking of? I do not plan to spend my life avoiding potential triggers, but I would love to be aware of them and at least have it in the back of my mind that X might cause Malachai to have a melt down. Say a truck air horn freaks your child out. Well, I’d never think it would be a problem. I wouldn’t go out of my way to make sure he never hears one, but I would know that I need to pay more attention if we hear one, because it could potentially be an issue. I am aware all kids are different in all aspects, but there are also similarities. I just want to make a general sort of list to keep in mind of things that cause your child to have a melt down, whether it is a certain fabric, a certain sound, a social situation, whatever.

I spoke with the school psychologist today. I need to fill out a release form for our psychologist so they can chat. I also mentioned his problems are primarily social, and after a bit she asked how I thought Monday would go. I said there is a good chance it wont go well at all. When he started at HACS when he was 3 he wasn’t presenting with his problems, and last year when he went he knew most of the kids and somewhat the teacher. It was a small class and not overwhelming. This class is much larger, he wont know anyone. I see it being a problem. She said she would make sure she was in there to watch for potential problems. We go in for orientation tomorrow, so I hope that helps him as well.

addendum

Took everyone to the doctor who had to go. M & S are fine. I took S to the school to complete her registration, which is done, as well as give them M’s blue & yellow forms to file.

Picked up dad from work and had him drop me off at the vet. Met Michael there. Turns out Sasha may have a huge yeast type infection, but she also has mites (basically mange, if I understood correctly) and is malnourished. Poor little doggie :(

She is staying at the vet for the afternoon to get a dip for the mites, and we’ll be taking her back every Thursday for a while. Once her skin clears up they’ll test it again and see if we got rid of them. Apparently most dogs don’t get this particular beastie past age 1 or 2. She was ignored for so long it just ran rampant. She is also still on the meds she came with, and will be getting a third once I pick her up tonight.

Once her skin clears up and her fur grows back in I am going to have her groomed. I am going to cut the mats and burrs out myself in the mean time.

We made arrangements for her to be boarded while we’re away in September. Michael will drop her off Saturday morning and we’ll pick her up Monday night.

She is going to be a spoiled little thing, I can tell.

Went to lunch at TooJays. Came home. Called Orkin to make arrangements for them to come out. They’ll be here Saturday morning. We need these ants taken care of. It seems to be a lot worse lately. They’ll come do inside, as well as outside, then come back in a month, and every other month after that. We were keeping them under control naturally for a while there. Now they are just everywhere and I am done. In come the nasty nasty chemicals :(

Going out to dinner with a fellow [Punky Mom] tonight, yay! Well, drinks at least. It’ll be pretty late for dinner.

Pretty uneventful until Monday. Both boys have check-ups (for their yellow papers, blue is taken care of already) early early. Michael is going to help prep rooms for painting at the school to start our Chessed hours. Then Dorian is off to the dentist at 5:30.

The dentist is supposedly sending forms for us to fill out so they are ready to go, but we’ll see if they get here in time for us to be there. D has some molars that need fillings, and I want to have his front teeth checked again. His lower left (facing him) tooth  is doing what the other did, coming in behind the tooth that is already there. Unfortunately, unlike the other, this one isn’t really loose enough to come out yet. Andi, didn’t Kira have rows upon rows of teeth? Did that sort itself out?

Malachai needs to see the dentist as well, and he is going to need lots of orthodontia. I swear his teeth are getting more crooked.
