Veganomicon – The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook

But Jenn, your raw! Why yes, yes I am. Most of the time. The rest of the time, I try to eat, you know, healthy.

I picked this up from B&N today. I am a cookbook whore. I am actually really pleased with this one (I also got 30% off the hardcover new book price, so yay!).

It starts with info about stocking a vegan pantry. Eight pages or so of stuff you should have, why you should have it, and what it’s good for.

Then it moves onto kitchen equipment. That is everything from knives (and they give inexpensive tips for good knives!), a cutting board, peeler, to a food processor, mandoline, crepe pan, baking sheets, and back to basics like measuring cups. It’s a good summery of a well stocked kitchen.

They have a brief intro to proper cooking & prepping terminology. Terms like braise and roux and slurry along with grate.

Info about lower-fat cooking. How to cook a vegetable. How to cook a gain. How to cook a bean. It’s packed with something like 50 pages of (what I think should be) basic kitchen info, written for the masses in easy-to-understand-ese.

Then it moves onto the recipes. Oh. My. God. The recipes. There are about 220 pages of recipes.

It starts with snacks, appetizers, little meals, dips and spreads. Spicy Tempeh Nori Rolls. Potato Latkes (um, that is what made me buy the book. Seriously. Any book that includes latkes and calls them latkes is a winner, hands down.). Curried Carrot Dip. Hummus. Guac.

Then it moves onto brunch. Brunch now includes home fries, chocolate chip brownie waffles and blueberry corn pancakes. Let’s not forget the crepes.

Moving on to salads and dressings. Ceasar, portobello, and macaroni salads. Dressings? Miso tahini, Sesame, Raspberry-Lime Vinegrette.

Sammiches. Yep, sammies. Thanks Rachel Ray. Really. Baja style grilled tempeh tacos. Black bear burgers (always a hit in my home). Snobby joes.

Mix N Match veggies, grains, beans, and tofu/tempeh/seitan. Tons of side dishes.

There are soups, casseroles (not your grandmas casseroles either) and one-pot meals (aren’t one-pot meals casseroles?). Pasta, noodles & risotto. Sauces & fillings. Breads, muffins & scones. Cookies & bars. Desserts. Who knew cookies & bars weren’t dessert?

Then, at the very end, are two pages of simple menus in case you need a theme and don’t feel like reading from cover to cover.

Loving this book. I needed to inject my meals with something, and a lot of these I already make, so it just involves changing the seasonings up.

Who wants to buy a chance to live right down the street from me for 50$?

RAFFLE UPDATE 1/24/09: Since the website went live on December 17th we have received an overwhelming response from ticket purchasers and site visitors to make the tickets more affordable. So, we have decided to offer the raffle tickets for $50 dollars each. This of course increases the chances to 1 in 6000. Purchasers will still be able to have the 3000 to 1 odds by purchasing 2 tickets. Those who have already purchased will receive 2 entries into the raffle instead of one. This will keep their chance of winning the same as when they originally entered. This change will allow more people to enter the raffle and in turn we will be able to offer the drawing at a sooner date. This has been a learning experience for all of us and we hope it will open the door to more people.

How It Works

Up for raffle is this beautiful, newer 2,160 square foot townhome located in Downtown Coral Springs, Florida. The home raffle benefits The Bit by Bit Therapy charitable organization of Parkland.

Address: 8305 W. Sample Road # 1 Coral Springs, FL 33065

Click to learn more about Bit by Bit Therapy. All proceeds received after raffle and property expenses will be donated to BIT by BIT Therapy.

Raffle tickets are purchased here on the Enter Now Page of this website. A total of only 6,000 tickets will be sold. Once 6,000 tickets are sold, the raffle drawing will be held. In the event 6,000 tickets are not sold by the anticipated raffle date of March 31, 2009, the right is reserved to extend the drawing date for an additional period(s) of time in order to reach said level or in the alternative to cancel the raffle and return all monies paid therefore to the purchaser of the ticket(s).

Multiple tickets may be purchased at a time. The cost is $50.00 per ticket, plus a $2.25 transaction processing fee. Your ticket is purchased from this site through PayPal’s secure website. Automatically your ticket will be generated and emailed to you. A copy will be sent to the drawing certifier (Robert Henry of Wittlin, Henry, Cain & Dry, CPA’s, P.A.) where the receipt copy will be placed into the raffle bin.

Once all 6,000 tickets are purchased, the accountant will then certify the drawing and authorize the honoree to draw the winning ticket. (The Honoree will be selected by the accounting firm and Bit by Bit Therapy). The drawing location will tentatively be at the property location. All entries will receive an email confirming the final raffle location and will be given the option to RSVP to attend. The winning ticket holder will be notified and his/her photo will be posted on the website. The drawing will also be recorded and posted on the Winner’s Page.

The winner gets THE DEED and THE KEYS to the Townhome free and clear!

The closing will be arranged to transfer title ownership at Main Street Title & Escrow, Inc. All costs of sale shall be paid by the raffle.
All monies left thereafter (after all expenses) shall be donated to Bit by Bit Therapy.

Thinking about purchasing a ticket? Pledge your ticket with our Raffle Reminder Sign Up!

To make planning the drawing easier we’re now offering a Raffle Reminder feature. If you are waiting to buy your tickets please type your name, e-mail address and the number of tickets that you are planning on purchasing and we will e-mail you prior to the drawing so that you can be assured that the drawing will happen and you won’t get left out. Click Here to Sign Up .

This will not obligate you to purchase tickets but it will help us get a count of how many tickets sales to expect. Please keep in mind that once 6000 are sold the opportunity to enter has passed. Filling in the form does not guarantee you the ability to purchase a ticket. Once we get closer to the 6,000 mark you will be then notified to make your purchase.

I am thinking about buying two, one for Michael and one for Sara, as belated birthday gifts. if one of them wins, they can share the house once they are of age.

Sorry for the blur – but red!

I’m not really this pale (I don’t think) – I busted the front screen on my phone and I think it busted my camera too sad.gif

There is actually red, pink and orange, but it’s still wet and you can’t really see it yet.

Tiny Dread

So, I have a few tiny dreads going on – they’ve kinked up and shrunk soooo much. Thank goodness my entire head isn’t following suit!

I have two of these in back, and a couple up front. They are nice and tight, I gotta give them that.

(PS – my hair was about 4 times that long before it was backcombed and started locking up)

One down, two to go

Dor is doing the after school basketball. It only runs for five weeks, and then I have to decide if we sign him up again.

I did go to the gym yesterday and got some fliers and stuff. Tackle football starts soon (I don’t think it’s for my boys, but it starts soon lol) as does soccer. I got some fliers for various dance classes for Eshiva, so we need to pick one.

I didn’t find much for Malachai. I did find one karate class that offers a 100$/3 months intro rate, and then it’s 50$ a month after. There was one other class, I can’t remember what it was, that I need to talk to him about. If they choose karate, I might enroll both of them. I’ll find the money somewhere.

I also grabbed the book of sports, so I need to find out when that stuff runs. I am selfish – those sports are all outside and I hate just sitting outside. I also am not big into sports, so I guess that doesn’t help either. They are my kids and I’ll stick it out and cheer them on regardless, but I am not happy thinking about it. I don’t mind hanging out outside with them to play, but I am not all about organized sports and other parents. It’s totally my own fault I don’t have any friends here lol Picture Jenn the Soccer Mom! I promise you’ll at least get a chuckle lol
