unschooler, n : one who learns from life and love and great books and late morning
conversations and big projects and eccentric uncles and eyes-wide-open and mountains
and mistakes and volunteering and starry nights–instead of from classrooms and
exceedingly dull textbooks and sedative lectures and interfering homework. Synonyms:
homeschooler, self-schooler, autodidact, rise-out.
Since Dor has been so adamant about not being read to (except in the car, so I try to sneak stories in while DH is driving), I kind of had to slack off on the Oak Meadow since so much revolves around the stories. We have taken to doing about half the activities (the ones not story related or if they are, the ones I can relate to something else) and
unschooling the rest of the time.
Well, yesterday on the way home from the park, he asked me why we have trees, which led to an oversimplified explanation of photosynthesis which he approximately 4 hours later told my dad about, and today he asked about star fish (I think it was star fish) while we were at the
fish store getting a new pleco which led into a discussion about how they regenerate.
I am so excited he is taking an active interest in things other than misc. crafts that are pointless (he made a half dozen gingerbread men last week for some reason) or just vegging.
He is also all about Magic School bus and has told me all about the inner workings of a body the other day.
I love when things click!
